EXTENSION OF CERTIFICATION (EOC) EOC BASICS
The National Commission for Certification of CME Professionals (NC-CME) is pleased to offer an Extension of Certification (EOC) to Certified CME Professionals (CCMEPs) who wish to retain their credential after their certificates expire. The full value of the certification program will be recognized by CCMEPs who continue to participate in their own professional development and maintain the credential that designates them as healthcare professionals with careers in the field of CME / CPD / IME / CE.
The Extension of Certification program will extend the initial 3-year certification to 5 years for candidates who fulfill eligibility requirements. If your name appears in the Registry of Certified CME Professionals , and your certificate is within 3 months of expiring, you are eligible to apply for the EOC.
Qualified candidates will continue to be included in the “National Registry of Certified CME Professionals”, accessible online at www.NC-CME.org. New certificates displaying the extended expiration date will be mailed to arrive before the original certificates expire.
Timeline
Notices will be sent to each CCMEP Class approximately 3 months before the relevant expiration date. For example: if you are a member of the Class of March 2009 you will receive a notice in January and you must submit your EOC application before March 15.

Worksheets
Each candidate's EOC Eligibility Worksheet will be reviewed for evidence of personal continuous professional development (CPD) that has taken place since the initial certification date. The EOC point requirement is 12 points, compared with 15 points required for initial certification. Additional academic degrees, attendance at conferences and webinars targeted for CME professionals, memberships in CME organizations, presentations at CME events, and volunteer work in the CME community are among the activities that may qualify toward the 12-point requirement.
Exams and Outcomes
Candidates for the 2-year extension will not be required to sit for an exam. A NC-CME Committee is currently reviewing requirements for recertification after the EOC expires. The intended outcomes of the CCMEP program are to encourage persons in the CME community to assess their knowledge and skills periodically and to demonstrate competence regarding current CME guidelines and practices.
Expirations
CCMEPs who allow their certification to expire will not be listed in the National Registry and will not be permitted to use the CCMEP credential on email stationery or business cards.
CCMEPs who allow their certification to expire, then wish to be reinstated, will be required to pay for and pass the currently available 3-hour certification exam and will need to document 15 points of education/experience in the CME field.
